Getting ready for DragonCon

  • Aug. 22nd, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Elven Archer

Too Busy to do any regular posting :(  But here is the work in progress.  Still have a bunch to do on it, one week left til Con.  Can't speak in complete sentences.

The vambraces are actually attached to the mail shirt, and note how the straps tuck into the vambrace itself and the inner face is smooth so a bowstring won't snag when loosed.  The shirt itself is bronze anodized aluminum with gold anodized aluminum inlaid pattern.  1/4" rings - took a long time.

The spaulders are cuirbouille hardened leather underlayer covered by a brass plate or brass scales and then another layer of hardened leather on top - with cutouts to show the brass underneath.  New technique, VERY STURDY armor.  The breastplate will be made the same way and I have a brass scale skirt to go with it.  Much heavier than my old armor but the weight is better distributed.  The lines of my new armor are closer fitting and a little smoother than my old armor. Hopefully it will make me look a little more svelte. :)

Re: If that doesn't work...
Some time back, when Michael was in Savannah, someone mistook him for a Mexican lesbian.

The rest is Michael Cook history :)

That's fantastic work there! I'm really impressed by that brass showing through the leather, it's very attractive. And it sure does look sturdy.

Michael, I know you know this already...
.. but I just have to say it here.

I keep looking at these pictures, over and over again, and your talent and skill still amazes me, even after knowing you all these years.

You just keep getting better and better. I am honored to be considered your friend.

Very nice. The bronze with brass inlay look is very appealing. The spaulders are impressive, and I applaud the foretought gone into the bracers.

I'm still anticipating a photo of the entire costume so I can link it to my friends on the forums I frequent.

Also, I added you to my friends list! I hope to have a couple of little projects finished soon.

~Ronnie, Ver, or whatever it is kids these days are calling me.

Hey Micheal! This is Nadine from AoME..aka Pippin..aka Elrond from Bree this year! I was talking to Mir from the Tolkien Track at DCon, and she wants me to do a costume panel for next year. But we also were thinking of doing a 2...possibly 2 and a half hour long splot panel between costuming and leather/metal working.

Would you be interested in hosting the leather/metal working portion of this panel? You're the first one that came to mind, since you produce absolutely AMAZING stuff!

Thanks!

Hi Nadine. I would absolutely love to do the panel! :) I can cover everything from design all the way to fabrication, so whatever you need from me, I will provide. Thanks, and give my thanks to Mir as well.

But of course! I added you on LJ, btw!

We have a whole year to plan stuff, and Mir also said she'd be willing to give us a 2 or more hour time slot to fit in all we can fit in and talk about all we can talk about.

I'm going to get in contact with a silk dupioni manufacture that I buy from, and that actually provided the silk for some of the LotR costumes, and have him send me business cards and and possibly some samples, in turn for pimping his business ;)! I do know I'd like to set up dress forms behind the panel tables to display costumes. I only have one, so I may need to infest in mannequin doubles or something...if you want to look into it as well.

But again, we have a whole year. My email is peregrintook310@gmail.com, and Mir is aperfectdot on LJ. She's supposed to be contacting you about this.

Thanks!

Well infested mannequins aren't so bad, especially if it's a koala infestation. And I make my own armor stands, and thought about making some generic dress forms to hang costumes on. Maybe I can make some highly decorated Elven dress forms or something :)
